A funeral was held Wednesday on Staten Island for a detective beloved by friends, family, and colleagues.

Joseph Cavitolo, 51, died on October 25 after a battle with cancer.

The long-standing member of the New York City Police Department's media office was celebrated at St. Charles Catholic Church in Oakwood.

"Joseph, I know for better than 20 years. He was a good human being, a good family man, and he's going to be sorely missed by his family and his co-workers and his friends," said Michael Palladino, president of the NYPD Detectives Endowment Association.

"Joe Cavitolo was a very caring individual," said Michael Collins, a retired assistant chief with the NYPD. "He raised a beautiful family. When he worked in the press office, he knew he how to handle unusual requests. He was good with the media. He was good with all the officials in the department and outside the department. He was a true professional, and a true, true caring family man."

Cavitolo joined the department in 1990 and began as a patrol officer in Park Slope.
