A teenager has been hospitalized and another is being questioned after police say they were discovered with the body of a newborn baby in a bag inside a Manhattan store.
Police say a security guard caught Tiana Rodriguez and Francis Estevez, both 17, shoplifting in the Victoria's Secret store in Herald Square Thursday.
The security guard also noticed an odor coming from a bag, according to police.
They say he made the discovery when he checked inside one of Rodriguez's shopping bags.
The two girls are charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
Investigators have not said where the child was born, if it was carried to term or if the child was born alive.
For a time, police weren't allowing residents of the Marcy Houses building that Rodriguez lives in to enter the building.
NY1 spoke with a man who lives upstairs from her.
"She was trying the whole pregnancy. She wore big clothes and all that," the man said. "But to find this out is a really big, complete shock, because the girl is not a bad girl. She's young. She doesn't be out here in the projects. She goes to the store or the school out back and she says hi. She's not rowdy. She's not loud. She doesn't speak to anybody like that."
Neighbors told NY1 that Rodriguez also has a 2-year-old child but does not have custody of that child.
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
