Members of the New York City Fire Department said goodbye Wednesday to a firefighter killed last week by an apparently drunk driver in New Jersey.

They paid their respects at a wake for 56-year-old John Monteverde.

The 31-year department veteran was on a motorcycle when he collided with a vehicle in Union Township last week.

Monteverde was a decorated and longtime member of Engine Company 22 in Manhattan, although he recently transferred to Engine Company 159 on Staten Island.

"John was a really good guy. He was a hard worker, and always working hard for his family," said Captain Chris Reginella of the New York City Fire Department. "[I was a] firefighter with John 22 years ago, and then I came back and worked with him again the last six years.

"It's just a sad story," he added. "Even as sad as everyone is, as we tell stories about John, we're laughing because that's just the kind of guy he was."

Anthony Marsel, 24, of Elizabeth, N.J., has been charged with driving while intoxicated in connection with the crash.
