As the city prepares to mark one year since Hurricane Sandy, friends and family gathered in Staten Island Friday to dedicate a memorial to two neighbors who died during the storm.
The Ocean Breeze Civic Association organized the celebration in memory of Ella Norris and James Rossi.
The memorial stone was placed at the corner of Buel and Quincy Avenues.
Kathy Langella, who lost her mother, Ella, in the hurricane, shared her gratitude.
"The people who came together here today, it's a wonderful feeling," Langella said. "I mean, it doesn't bring mom back, but it's a wonderful feeling to see everybody come together."
"This memorial and dedication is to, here, always to be a reminder of what has happened in our area and not to let anyone forget how these two brave souls lost their lives in a tragic event," said Joseph Herrnkind of the Ocean Breeze Civic Association.
Twenty-four Staten Island residents lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
