A Staten Island firefighter is free on bail after allegedly holding his ex-girlfriend and her young daughter hostage at gunpoint for seven hours inside their home last week.

Thomas Taps, 42, a 12-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, is accused of climbing through the woman's kitchen window Thursday around 9:45 p.m.

Taps allegedly beat and choked his one-time companion, and threatened to shoot her and decapitate her 5-year-old daughter.

Taps was arraigned Saturday on several charges including burglary, assault, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child.

"I'm home all day, in and out, and I didn't hear anything. No commotion. No nothing," said Daniel Archevald, a neighbor of the victim. "Something's not right. He's not playing with a full deck, that's for sure."

Taps has been suspended for 30 days without pay, which is the maximum allowed at the moment. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
