A 3-year-old girl is dead after being struck by an SUV while she was crossing the street in Queens over the weekend.
Police identify the girl as Allison Lao.
Witnesses say she and her grandmother were crossing along Main Street in Flushing around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
That's when the SUV came around Cherry Avenue to make a left turn and hit the little girl.
Witnesses say the driver got out of the car and was clearly distraught.
"When the girl got run over - he came out. He was crying, trying to call 911," said one witness.
"He couldn't really see her because the grandmother was in front of her and she was so little. So, I guess when he made the turn he couldn't see her - she was behind the grandmother," said another witness.
"I got to the hospital and they were still working on her. I went in to get checked - I had blood all over me. I went to get checked as a precaution. And before I left they told me she didn't make it," said Rick Hall, a witness who performed CPR on the girl.
NY1 is told Lao was eating a piece of watermelon and not holding on to her grandmother's hand.
The driver remained on the scene.
There appears to be no criminality at this time.
