It was a veritable Noah's Ark at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine Sunday as pet owners brought their four-legged friends to be blessed.
The annual festival celebrates the life of St. Francis of Assisi, who advocated for harmony between humans and animals.
The celebration ended with a procession through the halls of the cathedral.
For churchgoers, it was another way to show their pets how much they care.
"Our dog Miska has been a blessing in our lives, so we thought it would be right to bring him here to this wonderful cathedral and let him experience God's blessings among other animals," said one pet owner.
"Often times, dogs, especially in New York, aren't allowed in too many places, so it's sweet that he's able to come in here and get a blessing, treated like one of God's kingdom," said another.
This is the 29th year this celebration has taken place.
Similar processions were held throughout the world.
