A fallen soldier from Staten Island is being nominated for a Silver Star, one of the nation's highest honors.
Staff Sergeant Michael Ollis, 24, was killed on August 28 in Afghanistan.
According to a Department of Defense report, Ollis' team was under attack from insurgents.
He not only made sure they all were safe in a bunker, he then ran toward the sound of gunfire to help others.
Officials say Ollis died when he threw himself between a suicide bomber and a soldier from Poland.
He was laid to rest last weekend after a funeral in his home neighborhood of New Dorp.
It had been Ollis' second tour in Afghanistan.
