A Bronx Community Board on Wednesday voted in favor of turning the Kingsbridge Armory into the world's largest ice sports venue.
Developers predict it would bring more than $1.5 billion in benefits to the community and create a significant amount of jobs.
The massive space, which has been vacant for the past 17 years, takes up an entire city block between Jerome and Reservoir avenues.
Plans call for the construction of nine indoor rinks, a performance center, and off-ice fitness facilities.
A previous proposal to turn the site into a shopping mall was rejected by borough president Ruben Diaz Junior and the city council.
Diaz must also approve this plan.
If given the green light, New Yorkers could be lacing up their skates by 2017.
