Police now say that a Bronx man charged with stabbing another man to death on a Queens street Monday said that the alleged killer admitted to that attack and another attack because he thought his victims were gay, but they say it all may be the delusions of a troubled mind. NY1's Dean Meminger filed the following report.
Alba Orozco, the wife of stabbing victim Ever Orozco, says it's hard to believe her husband of 15 years is dead.
She says he had just dropped her off at a doctor's office on Monday on Roosevelt Avenue when people outside started yelling.
"I was waiting for the doctor when somebody was screaming, 'Help me, help, help, please help,'" Alba Orozco said. "Everybody went to the window to see what happened."
Her husband was being stabbed to death, allegedly by 22-year-old Steven Torres, who lives in the Bronx.
Police say Torres told them that his 69-year-old victim was blowing kisses at him. They couldn't find a single witness to back that up.
Orozco was stabbed multiple times in the neck and chest.
"Here, seven! In the chest, here, here," Alba Orozco said. "Terrible, terrible."
Torres is being charged with murder and assault as a hate crime, and police say he told them this isn't the first time he's attacked someone he thought was gay.
Torres is also charged in another stabbing. That incident happened last week on Stanton Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Police say Torres claims that man, a construction co-worker, also made unwanted sexual advances towards him.
Isabel Agilar works in the dry cleaners at the location and says officers who showed up last Thursday told her about the attack.
"I asked to him, 'What happened?' Agilar said. "He said, 'Somebody come inside, stabbed the guy in the arm, and he left.'"
That victim did survive.
Alba Orozco said her husband was her everything.
"Charismatic. He was generous. He was nice. He was my partner. All the time together, everywhere," she said.
She says she doesn't know what she's going to do now and hopes God gives her the strength to continue on without her husband.
As for Steven Torres, he's undergoing psychiatric tests.
