The state Department of Motor Vehicles is experimenting with extended hours at several locations, including one in Manhattan.
Starting today, the Herald Square DMV will be open Saturdays from 8 am to noon.
Weekday hours are also being extended, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The changes are temporary for now before officials assess whether the extra hours are useful.
"It's one of many customer service initiatives that we're trying here, and it's to be more convenient for our customers," said DMV Director of Operation Joseph Crisafulli.
"I think it's great. It works for my schedule, the weekdays are usually pretty busy for me, so Saturday worked out well," one New Yorker said.
"I think we're all busy Monday through Friday, and this will be invaluable to the working people," another New Yorker said.
The pilot program is scheduled to end on November 23.
