A garage worker is lucky to be alive after a car he was in fell down several floors in a Manhattan parking garage.
It happened at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday at a garage at Second Avenue and East 80th Street.
Investigators say the elevator doors on the fifth floor opened, but the elevator car wasn't there.
The SUV fell down the shaft and got stuck between the second and first floors.
Fire officials say the driver escaped through the moon roof.
"This fellow was very lucky. This fellow was able to get out of the moon roof and leave the vehicle while still inside of the shaft," said assistant chief Ronald Spadafora of the New York City Fire Department. "So when our units came on the scene, he was basically out of the car."
The driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.
Crews used winches to bring the car back up onto the second floor.
The Department of Buildings has issued a full vacate order for the elevator shaft and is now evaluating other elevator shafts in the building.
