A 13-year-old faces charges after an alleged rape of an 8-year-old girl inside a bathroom at a Harlem library.

According to investigators, the attack happened Wednesday inside a bathroom at the Countee Cullen Public Library on West 136th Street.

Police say the girl was there with her brother and a caretaker.

They say that while she was on her own, she ran into a 13-year-old boy she recognized, and he convinced her to go into a unisex bathroom with him.

Officials say the girl did not mention being raped until speaking with her mother at home.

Police say a 13-year-old is being charged with rape, sexual assault and unlawful imprisonment.

"They should have security there," said one library patron. "That way, you won't have these types of problems going on."

"There's not enough supervision, security in a public place," said another. "It's just, it's mind-boggling."

In a statement, the New York Public Library said in part that they are "working with the NYPD to help in every way possible with its investigation, providing footage from library security cameras."
