Fashion Week kicks off on Thursday at Lincoln Center, and one of the industry's leading designers has moved into a new showroom, with a hot new collection to match. NY1's Cheryl Wills filed the following report.
Designer Zang Toi is living large.
Toi has been in the business for more than 20 years, and now he's moving on up to the East Side.
He gave NY1 an exclusive tour of his deluxe showroom in the sky.
From Crystal chandeliers to bags costing a whopping $15,000, Zang's new digs are a royal showstopper.
"To have a great new location, to have the entire 20th floor right across from the legendary Rockefeller Center, you can't get any better than that. It's like I'm living the American dream," Toi says.
NY1 seconds that.
People would never know it from the ultra-glam collections that he dreams up every season, but Zang Toi comes from incredibly humble roots.
He was born in a tiny village in Malaysia, the youngest of seven kids.
The designer says his childhood inspires his work.
"For a boy who come from a little village in Malaysia, where the population is 10,000 people with two main streets, and I grew up in a grocery story until I was 15 years old," Toi says.
Zang Toi left Malaysia at 18 and headed for the Big Apple to study at Parsons School for Design.
Once he hit the fashion scene, it didn't take long for him to get noticed, with his lavish use of luxurious fabrics and impeccably tailored dresses.
His latest high-end 'House of Toi' collection for spring is inspired by classical ballet.
Toi says he's branching out, thanks to his new website shopzangtoi.com, where his brand can be found on everything from accessories to cosmetics to leg wear.
For those who cannot afford a $9,000 handbag, there are really cool t-shirts to buy.
"My job is very simple as a designer. All I want is to make women look and feel beautiful," Toi says.
NY1 will drink to that.
