The top three floors of a Manhattan building had to be evacuated Thursday after a man fell through a staircase.

The incident happened in a six-story building on East 104th Street in East Harlem at around 2 p.m.

The man who fell was taken to the hospital. There is no word on how badly he was hurt.

Residents of the building said it was being renovated, and they said the whole thing has them unnerved.

"Me and my mom, we're just really scared that if something's going to happen when we go up the stairs or come back down," said one resident. "We're just really scared, or if we're going to collapse down or if we're going to fall."

The Buildings Department said it will test the structural integrity of the staircase before deciding when residents can return.

The Red Cross is putting up some of the residents in a hotel.
