A funeral service was held Wednesday for a transgender woman beaten to death in an alleged hate crime.
Family and friends gathered at St. John's Pentecostal Church in Harlem to say goodbye to Islan Nettles.
The 21-year old was killed earlier this month.
Police say it happened after a group of men found out she was transgender.
Mourners said Nettles will be dearly missed.
"He affected so many people's lives just because he tried his best to live out his life the way he wanted to be seen," said one person.
Paris Wilson, 20, has been charged with assault.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says those charges could be upgraded, pending action by a grand jury.
