Officials say a Friday night fire at a Staten Island home endangered the lives of more than 60 animals.

The fire department says crews responded to a Bowen Street blaze in the Clinton section of Staten Island at around 9:30 p.m. Friday.

While the fire was put out quickly, firefighters discovered about 68 small breed dogs living in the home in what they call hoarding conditions.

Animal care and control removed the animals and is having them evaluated by its medical staff.

The agency will care for the dogs until the incident is further investigated.

No one was injured, and there was no word on arrests as of 4:30 p.m. Saturday. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
