As they cross New York Harbor, Staten Island Ferry riders may soon be able to surf the web.

The Department of Transportation says it's exploring the possibility of free Wi-Fi service for ferry riders, both at terminals and aboard the boats.

The DOT is asking technology providers for information on how the service might work and whether it's feasible.

Responses are due by October 8.

The ferry transports an average of 65,000 passengers every day.
