Former New York Knick Dean "The Dream" Meminger has died.

The 65-year-old's body was found late Friday morning by police inside a hotel on West 145th Street in Harlem.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Meminger grew up in the city and went on to become a star player in high school and college.

Known as "The Dream," he spent four years as a popular player on the Knicks, earning a championship ring in 1973.

After his career Meminger experienced some troubled times, including being badly injured in a fire in 2009.

He is the father of NY1's criminal justice reporter, also named Dean Meminger.

The Meminger family released a statement Friday evening thanking supporters their condolences.

"We want to thank everyone for their prayers and condolences during this difficult time for our family," the statement said. "Dean 'The Dream' Meminger touched the hearts of so many on and off the basketball court. Through basketball and education, he helped countless people around the country receive scholarships, high school and college admissions, and even employment. Dean 'The Dream' will be truly missed by his family, friends and fans."

The NY1 family extends its condolences to Dean and the entire Meminger family.
