The Department of Environmental Conservation is calling on Staten Island pool owners to help them identify a destructive species of beetle.

Asian longhorn beetles have caused the death of hundreds of thousands of trees in the tri-state area.

In an attempt to identify communities at risk of an infestation, the DEC is asking pool owners to take part in a survey this summer.

Participants will regularly check their pool filter and report any beetle-looking insects they find to the DEC.

"All you do is sign up and then just keep an eye on your pool, but really what you're doing is helping the entire community," says the DEC's Garret Koplun. "You're protecting their forests, you're protecting their urban street trees."

Residents interested in participating in the survey should send an email to foresthealth@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
