As the city entered its second heat wave of the summer on Sunday, the city Office of Emergency Management announced that more than 400 cooling centers will remain open in the five boroughs through Monday to help New Yorkers beat the extended heat.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for the city that was in effective through 8 p.m. Sunday, as temperatures reached the mid-90s and felt closer to 100 degrees due to the humidity.

All New Yorkers are encouraged to drink plenty of water and other liquids and avoid strenuous activity outside. That is especially true for the very young and the elderly.

OEM officials say signs of heat exhaustion include feeling weak or faint, hot and dry skin or cold and clammy skin, breathing troubles, a fast heartbeat, confusion or dizziness and nausea.

There are plenty of ways to beat, including going to city beaches and pools.

New Yorkers can also cool off using the city's fire hydrants, but they need an approved cap from a local firehouse.

Department of Environmental Protection officials warn that an illegally opened hydrant could knock down a child with its stream or lower water pressure for fire hoses.
