A 14-year-old girl was brought to the hospital with burns Tuesday after her hair was set on fire near a Brooklyn middle school.
Department Of Education officials said the eighth grader was injured near I.S. 68 in Canarsie, after a sixth-grade boy argued with her, took out a lighter and then lit her hair on fire.
Friends, however, had a different account. They say the two just started dating and that he put his arm around her with a lighter in his hand, and it accidentally ignited her hair.
Witnesses say the two initially laughed it off, but when the flames got worse, a nearby worker put it out with a fire extinguisher.
Fire officials say the girl had second- and third-degree burns, and police say she suffered burns to her head, face and shoulders.
She is in serious but stable condition in Staten Island University Hospital.
DOE officials say the boy who lit the fire is likely to face disciplinary action.
