Rikers Island renamed its visitors center Monday in honor of a trailblazing former New York police commissioner.

The Rikers Island Central Visiting House will now be called the Benjamin Ward Central Visiting Building.

At a dedication ceremony Monday, Ward was remembered as a strong leader who cared about people in the justice system.

Ward was the city's first African-American police commissioner, serving in the late 1980s under Mayor Ed Koch.

He previously served as the head of corrections for the city and for the state.
