The city is renaming a former elementary school in Queens for the late Rep. Geraldine Ferraro.

The former P.S. 290 in Maspeth will be known as the Geraldine A. Ferraro Campus when it reopens in the fall.

Ferraro began her professional life as a public school teacher in Astoria.

She worked as Queens assistant district attorney in 1974, and when she was elected to Congress in 1979, her office was a few blocks away from P.S. 290.

Ferraro was the first female vice presidential candidate, running with Democrat Walter Mondale in 1984.

Ferraro died on March 26, 2011. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
