Ballet lovers are mourning the loss of legend Maria Tallchief.
Her daughter says Tallchief died Thursday in Chicago.
Tallchief was a onetime prima ballerina for the New York City Ballet, which she joined in 1948.
For a time, she was married to choreographer George Balanchine. They worked on famous productions, including "Firebird" and "The Nutcracker".
She retired in 1965, but continued teaching, and founded the Chicago City Ballet.
Tallchief received a Kennedy Center honor in 1996 and is in the National Women's Hall of Fame.
Maria Tallchief was 88 years old.
