The New York City Police Department says a man stabbed his girlfriend to death Saturday morning in Brooklyn before trying to kill himself.
Officers say they found the 31-year-old woman's body in front of a building on 51st Street in Sunset Park at around 10:30 a.m.
Police say she had been stabbed in the neck.
She had not been identified as of 4 p.m. Saturday.
The officers say they then found a 44-year-old man inside the building who had also been stabbed in the neck.
Police believe he stabbed himself after attacking the woman.
Neighbors say they were surprised by the violence.
"He's really a calm person," said one neighbor. "He's really someone you can get along with. He's not a violent person. He's someone you can get along with. He's a friendly person.
"Usually, it's a safe neighborhood," said another. "But this just opens my eyes and makes me realize, no matter how safe I thought it was, this is Brooklyn, and this can happen anywhere."
The man was taken to Lutheran Medical Center.
He is listed in critical condition as of 4 p.m. Saturday.
