A Rockaway church still recovering from Hurricane Sandy suffered a major setback Tuesday when a car came crashing through one of its walls.

It happened early Tuesday morning on Beach Channel Drive.

Police say a man driving with a suspended license smashed into the church.

The church's pastor, Dennis Loncke, said the building was undergoing renovations due to damage from Hurricane Sandy.

He said the car barreled through what was to become the women's bathroom.

Loncke said he's trying to look on the bright side.

"We were just preparing, from the women's perspective, to get the women's bathroom up and running, and maybe the colors and the design wasn't the way that the Lord wanted it," Loncke said. "And so, for an exciting spin to it, the walls were already up, and so the Lord just allowed the SUV to come and rearrange things."

The volunteer group Respond and Rebuild was also operating out of the church.

The group said it'll wait for the damage to be thoroughly assessed before deciding if it's safe to stay.
