The New York City Police Department has named Chief Philip Banks III as its new Chief of Department to replace the retiring Joseph Esposito, whose walked out of police headquarters for the final time Wednesday.

Banks is a 26-year veteran who Commissioner Ray Kelly described as a consummate builder of community relations.

Esposito was the force's third in command.

He was the highest-ranking uniformed member and longest-tenured officer on the force.

He joined the department in 1968 and held every rank in the NYPD, including more than 12 years as Chief of Department.

Esposito's turns 63 on Thursday, and 63 is the department's mandatory retirement age.
