An 18-year-old boy is dead after being struck by a subway train on his birthday.

Police say Liam Armstrong and a friend were trying to cross the tracks at the 79th Street and Broadway station around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when Armstrong was hit by an uptown 2 express train.

His friend made it across safely.

"I deal with high school students. Unfortunately, you see it happen a lot where they make decisions that are quite dumb," said one subway rider.

"I live right here. I mean, I saw the trucks pulling up and, oh my God, why was he or she crossing the tracks though? It's tragic," said another subway rider.
