Brooklyn residents gathered Saturday for a rally to save their local hospital.

A grassroots effort is underway to keep Interfaith Medical Center in Bedford-Stuyvesant open as a full service hospital.

Residents said they sent hundreds of letters to the New York State Health Commissioner requesting information on the financial status of the hospital, and demanding that no services be cut.

Interfaith filed for bankruptcy protection last year.

"We have a growing community. The community is changing as we speak. And this hospital means a lot because of their services," said Reginald Sweeney of the People's Committee to Save Interfaith. "To travel half a mile, a mile away when you're sick or injured or hit by a car. It's critical to saving lives."

Another local facility, Long Island College Hospital, is already in the process of shutting down.

NY1 has reached out to the New York State Health Department for comment about Interfaith.
