Liberty Island has been closed since Hurricane Sandy, but Sen. Charles Schumer asked the U.S. Department of the Interior on Monday for a progress report and a timeline on its reopening.

The Statue of Liberty itself was not damaged in the hurricane, but Liberty Island's utilities and power systems were destroyed.

Its docks and brick pathways were also severely damaged.

Schumer says about 400 people are out of work while the Island remains closed, and New York is losing millions of tourism dollars.

"In certain other areas -- Gateway, Staten Island -- DOI has done a good job," Schumer said. "Why they're doing such a bad job on the most important property probably in their domain in the New York area is a mystery."

The Interior Department is considering multiple options, including opening Liberty Island with limited services, but gave no timeline for when that could happen.
