A new Danish eatery in TriBeCa brings a taste of Denmark to the city. Zagat editor Kelly Dobkin filed the following report for NY1.

Aamanns Copenhagen is the New York City offshoot of the popular Danish restaurant from owner Sanne Ytting.

"I came from Copenhagen almost 14 years ago, and a few years ago, I started to come up with an idea to create a piece of Denmark in Manhattan," Ytting says. "I wanted to introduce New Yorkers to what I find is the best that we have to offer from Denmark, and that goes for the traditions, the beautiful design, music, art and, of course, the food is very important."

The Danish-focused menu centers around smørrebrød, an open-face sandwich served on housemade rye bread that features a variety of toppings.

"We have seven different kinds of smørrebrød," says Carl Kristian Frederiksen, a consulting chef at Aamanns Copenhagen. "Everything is made in house. We bake two times a day, one time in the morning and one time in the afternoon."

The modern space, which features large windows and rotating artwork, has a uniquely Scandinavian feel, and was conceived and designed by a famous Danish designer.

"It took me more than a year to find this location because I wanted that feel of Scandinavia, with the big windows, all the lights," Ytting says. "So when I stepped in here the first time, I just knew: this is it. This has exactly what I’m looking for. The artwork you see in here was made by a Danish artist, and the piece you see in the back is especially made for the restaurant, which was a great honor for us."

In addition to the sandwiches, Aamanns makes it own homemade aquavit, which comes in a variety of flavors.

"We have a rye bread aquavit. We have pumpkin. We have a raspberry-honey aquavit," Ytting says. "So we have all different flavors. And we continue to develop, so we have great selections of aquavit, which is a big deal in Denmark."
