The New York City Department of Correction said two off-duty city correction officers were killed in a Brooklyn car accident early Sunday morning.

Police said a 2004 Nissan Murano was driving northbound on Kings Highway at around 4:45 a.m. Sunday when the driver lost control of the vehicle after hitting a curb and entered the road's southbound lanes.

According to police, a 2006 Ford Explorer traveling southbound on Kings Highway collided with the passenger side door of the Murano between Snyder Avenue and Church Avenue.

The two women in the Murano, identified by the Department of Correction as Tiffany Underwood, 31, and Africaque Smith, 43, were pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital.

The driver of the Explorer, who police say is a 23-year-old off-duty police officer, was treated for his injuries in Kings County Hospital.

By Monday morning it was not known if alcohol played a role, but published reports say a can of the caffeinated alcoholic drink Four Loko was found in their car. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
