A group of children from Far Rockaway, displaced by Hurricane Sandy, headed into Manhattan Saturday to lace up some skates at the Citi Pond rink. NY1's Amanda Farinacci has the story.

Some skated, some fell, but all smiled Saturday morning at Citi Pond in Bryant park.

A group of about 100 kids from Far Rockaway took to the ice during a trip planned to lift their spirits weeks after Hurricane Sandy.

"I was scared and I started crying because I felt like we were gonna lose everything," one child said.

Lisbed Flores and her family were displaced from their apartment for nearly two weeks after the hurricane. A transformer blew in her building's basement and fire forced them to evacuate.

Her story is one of many shared by kids who attend the Cross Island YMCA -- all struggling to get back to normal after the storm.

"I feel better now, but before used to feel sad about it," Flores said. "About how many people lost their houses, their lives."

The homes of all the children who attended Saturdays free outing suffered damage during Sandy.

Some, like Gardner, spent two weeks in a shelter because his home was uninhabitable. Many of the other had to deal with the loss of power and heat.
The cross island YMCA teamed up with citi pond to give the kids time to forget their worries and enjoy the holiday season:

Now they are talking about it because I guess it's a good time for them. And we're all learning from the experience because some of them have never been affected like this before.

For most of these kids it's their first time ice skating - which means they had a wide range of emotions and a wide range of techniques for the first time:

I am nervous...because I'm scared I might fall.

It hurts a lot. Right here and when you fall your tush hurts sometimes.

I just got it. (You just figured it out? How's you figure it out?) first you have to skate and then put your hands on your knees.

But it was this skating technique that the kids seemed to like the best: Fall...and get right back up and try it again
