Family and friends are searching for answers after a Brooklyn mother was fatally shot at a local hospital early Tuesday morning. NY1's Dean Meminger filed the following report.

It's a heartbreaking mystery for family members. How did Shalema Gaskin end up dead outside Brookdale Hospital after rushing her 8-year-old daughter here because she was having an asthma attack?

"She was a loving mom, and if you needed anything, she would give it to you," said Lyla Evans, Gaskin's aunt. "We just talked to her. Her birthday is on the 20th of this month."

Gaskin had left her daughter at Brookdale while she went to see to the rest of her family, but police say she was found bleeding in the rear of the hospital around 3 a.m. Tuesday. She'd been shot. She was rushed inside but doctors could not save her.

"She left and went home to take care of her other children," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "Apparently, returning to the hospital, in the vicinity of Brookdale Hospital she was shot once in the neck and expired."

"They worked on her for a while and she just died. But we don't have no idea why she was back here," said Mona Lewis, a family friend. "But that time of day, this entrance from the back is not open. So we don't know why was she around here. "

Police and family members said the 8-year-old's father stayed at her bedside as Gaskin left the hospital.

Detectives were in the area looking for any evidence of the shooting.

Brookdale Hospital said it's cooperating with the investigation.

"I want the person that shot and killed my daughter caught," said Tanya Gaskin, Shalema Gaskin's mother. "I want some justice. That's the main thing. Right now, I'm not going to rest until I find out who killed my daughter."

Gaskin's family said she recently joined a church and went to services most Sundays. They described her as an angel.

The 32-year-old mom leaves behind three daughters.
