An off-duty NYPD officer was recovering from surgery Thursday as new surveillance video shows Wednesday night's gun battle with three armed robbers that left one of them dead in the University Heights section of the Bronx.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that off-duty Transit Officer Ivan Marcano, 27, was a passenger in a car being driven by his girlfriend on Harrison Avenue in the Bronx at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when his girlfriend witnessed two men allegedly robbing a third.

Kelly said that Marcano told his girlfriend to call 911, exited the vehicle, took out his shield and gun and identified himself as a police officer.

According to Kelly, as soon as he identified himself, one of the suspects fired, hitting Marcano in the chest.

Kelly said the suspects then fled in a car as Marcano climbed back into the passenger seat of the car being driven by his girlfriend.

A block north, at the corner of Burnside Avenue and Harrison Avenue, Marcano's girlfriend sounded the horn of her car several times, according to Kelly.

Kelly said that when that happened, a white Mustang in front of them moved forward and struck a black livery cab, which then struck a parked car.

According to Kelly, the three suspects got out of the white Mustang and Marcano got out of his car and pursued the three men.

Kelly said that while in pursuit, Marcano fired two shots with a gun in his right hand while applying pressure to his chest wound with his left hand.

One of the shots hit 18-year-old Prince James, killing him.

As can be seen in the surveillance video below, Marcano then found an ambulance on Burnside Avenue, which took him to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital.

Sources tell NY1 he called his own relatives as he raced to the hospital to tell them he loved them and that he was afraid he would die.

One neighbor of the Marcano family told NY1 the officer's take-down of a suspect is not out of character.

"I'd be coming in with groceries or laundry bags and he'd say, 'You going up?' And grab my stuff and bring it up and go back down to his apartment. Or he'll say, 'You need help? I'll say, 'No' and he'll still take my bag," said the neighbor. "I was shocked but not in the sense that he stepped in. He always appeared to be that type of guy."

Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch told reporters that Marcano's actions make all police officers proud.

"This is typical of what a New York City police officer is ready to do on a regular basis," said Lynch.

Police say the two other suspects are still at large, including 20-year-old Jason Leiva.

Leiva is described as being 5-feet-8-inches tall and 148 pounds.

Commissioner Kelly said the alleged robbery suspects stole approximately $80 from their victim.

Marcano is the 12th police officer to be shot in 2012.

The organization Citizens Outraged at Police Being Shot (COP SHOT) is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects wanted in connection with the shooting. The NYPD is offering another $10,000 and Crime Stoppers is offering $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information is asked to call the 24-hour COP SHOT hotline at 1-800-COP-SHOT, or reach Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS, or by texting CRIMES and then entering TIP577, or visiting www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
