A city police detective is recovering and a 29-year-old man is under arrest after they scuffled on a Times Square subway track.
Police say 41-year-old Det. James Griffin hit his head on the rail of the downtown N tracks after a fight ensued when he tried to rescue Richard Wilcox at around 7 a.m. Thursday.
Griffin was knocked unconscious.
Fellow officers jumped in to subdue Wilcox and rescue their colleague.
Wilcox, who police say is emotionally disturbed, was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.
Griffin, an 18-year veteran of the force, was taken to Bellevue Hospital.
He regained consciousness there and is now in stable condition.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly visited the officer, who is said to be in good spirits.
