As Consolidated Edison's lockout continues, New Yorkers dealt with extreme heat and thunderstorms Wednesday that further strained the power grid.

Wednesday's record-breaking heat led to the greatest amount of electricity use for the year, according to Con Ed, and power outages were reported in the northeast Bronx and City Island.

About 1,700 customers in the Bronx lost their power as the temperatures reached 100 degrees in Central Park.

Con Ed officials also recorded an electric peak usage for the year, with 12,836 megawatts being used at 1 p.m.

The utility has also slashed voltage by about 5 percent in parts of Manhattan.

The heat was followed by thunderstorms which caused further outages. At approximately 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, Con Edison reported 4,886 outages, with more than 2,500 of those outages in Queens. That number of outages was reduced to 1,615 as of approximately 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Con Ed.

Con Ed currently has about 5,000 managers working to keep the system up and running, as the utility has locked out 8,500 employees over a contract dispute.

Representatives from both sides have been meeting on and off for more than two weeks now.

Neither side has been able to agree on key points like pensions and wages. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
