Brooklyn residents gathered for a rally Friday, one day after a suspected car thief was shot during a struggle with police.
Investigators say 23-year-old Shantel Davis was shot and killed after crashing a stolen car into a minivan while fleeing from police in East Flatbush Thursday afternoon.
Officials say the shooting happened when two plainclothes officers tried to enter the stolen car and Davis threw the vehicle into reverse.
On Friday, residents demonstrated near where Davis was shot. Many said the shooting did not have to happen.
"This is something painful for the community and we hope and we are asking that a careful and performed investigation should be conducted," said City Councilman Matthew Eugene.
"We're really just trying to make sure and figure out what really happened so we can react to facts and not to emotion," said City Councilman Jumaane Williams.
Officials say Davis had previously been charged with attempted murder.
The two officers involved have been placed on administrative duty.
