The Call Blog: President Obama Stumps In New York City

  • Text size: + -

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

Shoring up his base may not get President Obama any additional votes, but it could at least keep the votes he had four years ago. All the excitement that was so prevalent in the last election is missing this time around and the President can’t afford to have his supporters stay at home and not vote. But will his supporters be satisfied with Obama’s efforts or is it a case of too little, too late? Only time will tell.

The race for the White House landed in New York City today, as President Obama delivered a commencement speech to the female graduates of Barnard College and attended a fundraiser co-hosted by the LGBT Leadership Council. On this day designed to target key constituencies, Obama said he learned to persevere "from watching the women who shaped my life."

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney held no public events today, but his campaign did push back against a new ad criticizing his business practices. Also today, Romney's bid for the GOP nomination was strengthened when Texas Congressman Ron Paul announced he is done spending money on his campaign.

What's your reaction to President Obama's day in New York City rallying his base? How has Obama handled women's issues during his presidency? When it comes to business acumen and the economy, does Obama lose ground to Mitt Romney? Why hasn't Ron Paul's message resonated with more Americans?

Send your thoughts using the link above.

Where has Obama been on these LGBT issues during his first 3 years? Or for that matter, where has he been for his entire political career?

This sudden change of mind reeks of politics and a total lack of conviction.

Are we to choose between Obama and Romney when it comes to creating jobs for Americans.

Which one persevered in that aspect.

Obama was not the original speaker chosen for this college. We were all informed that he called the college and asked if he could be the speaker. He has already informed us before today that by watching the women in his life that it is what made him persevere.
Romney did persevere as far as creating jobs.

In that aspect Obama loses ground to him. Remember one thing it is very hard to catch up in anything.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE PROMISES AND CHANGES THAT WERE TO BE MADE?

WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM ALL?

THERE ARE STILL SO MANY PEOPLE OUT OF WORK.

IN MY ESTIMATION I HAVE ALWAYS FELT IN MY HEART THAT EVEN ONE PERSON OUT OF WORK AT ANY TIME AT ALL IS ONE PERSON TO MANY.

IF OBAMA IS IN NEW YORK, WHO IS WATCHING JOE BIDEN?

Watched the President on NY One today, he delivered an inspirational and encouraging speech before the the Bernard graduates. Starting with the Lilly Ledbetter legislation he signed into law and his pro stance on women issues he continues to demonstrate his commitment to equality for women. Reseach the facts on Romneys so-called business acumen including how he decimated Bain Capitol and that massachusetts ranked # 47 out of the 50 states in job creation during hid tenure as govenor.

Except for the President finally coming out and addressing some inequities, there is no surprise here. The choice is clear, candidate A promises to increase the rights and opportunities of subgroups within our population, while candidate B wishes to take our society back to the 1950's. Guess who's who.

You can not ever expect a true bigot to support a black man and gay rights.

Obama lost my vote when he supported Same Sex Marriage, he could have won the Presidency based on his own merits, selling out for votes/capaign contribution from LGBT'ers, also saying his own little girl's classmates have same sex parent couples and that his girls don't care, well, that was too much.

He had no business speaking up for his little girls opinion, they are underage and can't possibly have an educated opinion about same sex marriage.

I am so very disappointed, Women are meant to marry Men.

Obama is in the right place at the right time. My husband and I were one of the first to become married on July 24, 2011 in Manhattan!!! Thank you for the opportunity to Identify our love for one another as a fellow American.

If We Are Talking About RELIGION: Please Keep in mind that John Smith was a Mystic Treasure Hunter. After he was tried & convicted for fraud. John Smith found a Golden Book under a rock and after given "Magic Glasses" from Moroni, Was able to interpret The Book of Mormon that The Lost Tribe of Isreal came to America..Split into two Tribes...And the Darker-Skinned Tribe (whomed GOD DAMNED) Became Native Americans.....That says it all for me. So much for religion. Obama believes All Americans should have the rights & priviliges In the U.S.A.

We need Obama more than ever. If Romney wins he promises to turn back the clock on nearly everything -- contraception, abortion and reproductive health care, pay equality, work equality, violence against women -- you name it. It will be Republican sharia law.

President Obama has lost my vote after he caved in on the issue of legalizing
same sex marriage. What infuriates me is that the proponents of it have distorted issue into one of equal rights. I don't deny the right of anyone being homosexual or being active homosexually.

What I strongly object to is taking the eternal instution of marriage and abusing it for political purposes. Marriage has nothing to do with equal rights. Like the weather, the seasons, food that grows from the ground, animal and plant life, it is gift from the Creator begun with Adam and Eve and its purpose is to love and procreate the human specie. It is a time-consecrated relation between man, woman and God.

I do not object to homosexuality; its practitioners should continue if they wish but not as a married couple. If same-sex marriage overpowers this country, we will go down the tubes as did the Roman Empire, the Persians, Assyrians and sacrificers of their children to the Molech diety, God forbid.

Truth is, the minorities are actually the majorities, whom all tend to support their own ballots anyway. Obama will get my vote simply because i'm black. I'm far from racist but again, people in general will support their own. Obama can win alone with the black, latino and gay, votes.

I am the Black Church. I am a Black, Christian man who does not approve of gay marriages but I admire President Obama's courage on this issue and others like it. Hmmm. I must take this into consideration at the polls.

Why do people insist on imposing their imaginary invisible gods on other people's lives? What infuriates me is that good honest people will often use the God excuse to punish and restrict other people. I refuse to let words written by fallible humans thousands of years ago dictate how I live my life today.

President Obama is one hundred percent correct. People want to say they are religious and God made man for woman, but that is incorrect. God wants us to be happy and respect each other. No one has the right to say two men or two women cannot get married. Marriage is now only for one man and one woman it is for two individuals that love each other to come together. President Obama has my vote!

The president had no other choice but to stand for gay rights... It's only right.

WE WERE ALL SO SICK AND TIRED OF BUSH AND THOUGH OBAMA WAS GOING TO CHANGE EVERYTHING, INSTEAD THINGS FOR MANY OF US ARE NEGATIVE MORE AND MORE EVERY DAY.

BRAVO TO LISA FROM OZONE PARK, I AGREE WITH HER, MARRIAGE IS MEANT FOR A MAN AND A WOMAN.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OLD PROMISES OBAMA MADE?

WHERE ARE THE WINDMILLS, SOLAR PANELS AND OTHER MONEY SAVING ENERGY METHODS HE PROMISED FOR EVERY HOUSE?

WHY ARE OUR CITIES SO INCREDIBLY OVERCROWDED WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS?
DOES HE KEEP THEM HERE FOR THEIR VOTES?

WHY IS CRIME UP ALL OVER THE USA?

OBAMA'S TRIP TO NEW YORK IS ANOTHER BILL FOR TAX PAYERS, HIS TRAVEL EXPENSES, SECURITY DETAIL, HOTELS ETC JUST LIKE MICHELLE'S COSTLY VACATION.

CUOMO UPSET ME AND NOW SO HAS OBAMA, I AM CHANGING FROM DEMOCRAT TO INDIE.

The President is doing a great job, I think that caller whom stated that marriage should be between a man and a woman, needs to wake up! Gay marriages is only to give us the right to have the same rights as the traditional couple. Also, help us look at Freedom for all people! We the Free!

We are in the 21st century. Why is this still even an issue? Gay marriage is absolutely an equal rights issue and denying that is no different than telling women they cannot vote or telling blacks they cannot live free. It's all wrong. Laws should be in place to prevent us from harming one another, not from loving one another.

Whether he did it for publicity or not he is still the first president to stand up in favor of it
and for that I commend him. He is not corrupting our country, but teaching us about equality and acceptance for one another.

Why is everyone worried about gay rights? Critics against this should worry about their own household and finance. This country was built on religious freedom and individual rights. Why stop in the 1980. Let's evolve!

How can his “evolving” belief suddenly evolve...overnight? Of course, the president was kowtowing politically to garner more votes from young adults, women, and LGBTs.

I Cannot believe Obama Fell for this Gay Rights and Marriage Question....It is Always Used by the GOP when they Know They Are IN trouble! Put a muzzle on VP Biden

Whatever you do VOTE do not listen to that caller that said not to Vote. if you dont vote your voice is not heard whoever you vote for.

It's amazing how the media's spin on an issue can create such negativity, so im not surprised callers like Yalitza expressed those sentiments. This President has repealed DADT, has any of these folks who are anti two human beings marriage instead of shacking up i.e. Living in sin, thought about that? Gays are fighting wars to protect our country, they are serving in the CIA, FBI, Police forces! Are they not to be celebrated and respected? Doesnt the President have the right to express his right - freedom of speech? Does Lisa and all those bible thumpers feel the same about Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Cuomo? Theyve expressed their firm belief in all our human rights against discrimination. If we're so protective of the great institution then lets ban divorces. By the way, is there a law that says rapists, murderers should not marry?

The folks who are against human beings because their sex lives is cinsider different, are no different from those who led the pogroms, the slave trade, segregration, miscegenation. The powers that be believe that women in the work force should earn less than a man, are those women who are anti-gay marriage okay with 77 cents on the dollar. To those who allegedly worry about children, i worry about your children, but only because they are being raised in homes where intolerance is spoon fed. So as a nation, we're destined to a continuation of racism, sexism, religious hate. What a debacle!!
