Three overtime periods? No problem for the resilient New York Rangers.
Marian Gaborik scored with five minutes left in triple overtime to give the Blue Shirts a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals early Thursday morning, and a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Semifinal series.
It was the first overtime playoff win in eight tries for the Rangers, whose last seven extra-frame playoff games had gone for losses.
The Rangers quieted the Washington crowd midway through the second period when captain Ryan Callahan opened the scoring on a deflection off a Michael Del Zotto shot. But Washington countered four minutes later when defenseman John Carlson put a shot over the shoulder of Ranger goalie Henrik Lundqvist.
Both teams failed to convert on late third-period power plays, and the Rangers couldn't convert on a power play early in the third OT. But Gaborik took a Brad Richards feed from behind the net and buried the shot for the win at 14:41 of the third overtime period.
Lundqvist had 45 saves in the marathon win.
The Rangers lost Game 2 of their Conference Quarterfinal series against the Ottawa Senators before going on to win that series 4 games to three.
Game 4 is Saturday afternoon in Washington.
