Family and friends gathered at a Monday wake to remember a Staten Island grandmother who was killed in a hit-and-run accident last week.

The wake was held in Port Richmond for 52-year-old Clara Almazo, seen above.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday.

Police say she was crossing Cary Avenue with her eight-year-old grandson when she was hit after attending Holy Thursday mass.

Witnesses say she pushed her grandson out of the way.

At the wake, Almazo's daughter, Gloria Herrera spoke about the driver accused of hitting her mother.

"I'm really hurt because that person did not have a heart. He couldn't have a heart to do what we did to my mother. I also feel bad because she left my little sisters when they still needed her," Herrera said through an interpreter.

"She loved everyone in her family, and we always loved her," said Odilon Almazo, the victim's nephew.

Brian McGurk, 40, who is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, is due back in court on Wednesday. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
