An audit by the city comptroller found the city's new 911 call system is one billion dollars overbudget and seven years behind schedule, but the city says the projection does not consider changes made to the program.
City Comptroller John Liu's report claims the cost of the Emergency Communications Transformation Program has ballooned to an estimated $2.3 billion, up from $1.3 billion.
The city says Liu's projection is not accurate because it does not consider changes made to the program.
The comptroller also says the project to combine emergency call operations and build a backup center has been plagued by technical problems and inadequate controls.
It was supposed to be completed in 2008, but Liu says that date has been pushed back to 2015.
Deputy Mayor of Operations Cas Holloway issued a statement saying, "The City long ago identified the issues raised in the Comptroller’s current audit, and had taken the measures necessary to address them."
