A man accused of firing a bullet that was deflected by a police officer's gun belt has been indicted on attempted murder charges.
Luis Martinez, 25, also faces weapons possession charges in the February 27 shooting on the Lower East Side.
Police say he opened fire when two officers approached him.
The officers gave chase and returned fire.
Authorities say a bullet from Martinez's gun hit Officer Thomas Richards but it was blocked by a magazine on Richards' gun belt.
Richards was then shot by police.
Martinez, who faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted on the attempted murder charges, is due back in court on May 3.
