The Staten Island Marine Corps League marked 67 years since the Battle of Iwo Jima in Sunnyside on Sunday.

Enlisted Marines and retired members held a ceremony at the league's headquarters, and paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while reflecting on their own experiences.

"I didn't think I would last 90 seconds. I don't think anybody else did, either. There was so much firing and shells firing all over the place. It was horrible, horrible," said Marine Corps League member Nicholas Trioaniello.

"If you look around, there are plenty of Marines still dying for this country and not enough people know about it," said Marine Corps League member Larry Dwyer.

Marines received 27 Medals of Honor for their conduct in the Battle of Iwo Jima. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
