Local leaders are planning to introduce legislation to address what they call racial intolerance within the New York City Police Department.
The new bill from Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries would require city police to live within the five boroughs, in order to better know their neighbors and show more sensitivity.
The NYPD came under fire after it was revealed some officers allegedly posted negative comments about the West Indian Day Parade on Facebook.
"Those who have no real understanding of the individuals they are policing, the individuals they are serving, will be inclined to disrespect us or far worse," Jeffries said.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says an Internal Affairs investigation found at least 20 Facebook comments about the parade may have come from officers.
