A lawsuit has been filed against the owners of a building that once housed a toxic school.
Rhonda Rivera worked as a teacher's aide at P.S. 51 in the Bronx for 19 years. According to the suit, she suffers from liver and pancreatic cancer and claims it’s because of her exposure to toxins at the school.
The building was once a lamp factory before it was leased to the city and used for classrooms for nearly two decades.
When the lease was up for renewal, air quality tests were done and dangerously high levels of cancer-causing toxins TCE and PCE were found.
She is suing for unspecified damages.
Schools Chancellor Walcott admitted at a heated meeting in August that the DOE made mistakes in not informing parents, teachers, and the school community that they had known about contamination problems in the school since January.
