Police are investigating after a newborn was found dead in an alley in Washington Heights Tuesday.

Officers responded to a 911 call and arrived at the building on West 191st Street at around 6:15 p.m.

Police say when they got there, they found the baby girl's body wrapped in a plastic bag inside a bucket.

Residents say they are hoping for justice.

"They thought they wasn't gonna get caught because they put it in five bags and just threw it there. But they did, and they're gonna get caught," said one resident.

"It's sad. It is. It's very sad," said another.

The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death.

New York's Safe Haven law allows for a baby up to a month old to be left at a hospital, police precinct or fire stationhouse with no questions asked.

Anyone with information on the case should contact the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577, or visit ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
