A Bronx man has been arraigned on charges that he assaulted a police officer during an argument over a water balloon.

Keith McNeil, 20, is charged with third degree assault.

Police officials say Ernest Rodrigz, 43, confronted a group of people in Bathgate on Wednesday after his car was hit by a water balloon.

They say McNeil "sucker punched" Rodrigz, who fell and hit his head on the sidewalk.

Rodrigz underwent brain surgery at St. Barnabas Hospital and is in critical condition.

He is a police academy instructor and has been with the NYPD since 1995.

McNeil is due back in court Tuesday. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
