City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Clerk Michael McSweeney announced Wednesday that the clerk’s offices in all five boroughs will be open for a full day of business on Sunday, July 24, the first day of marriage equality in New York.

“This is a historic moment for New York, a moment many couples have waited years and even decades to see, and we are not going to make them wait one day longer than they have to,” said Bloomberg.

City officials announced that state judges will volunteer to perform ceremonies and review waiver requests that could allow couples to avoid New York State’s 24-hour marriage waiting period.

Additionally, the offices will have their hours extended by two hours the following week in anticipation of the influx of couples.

Usual hours for the Manhattan clerk’s office are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with offices in the other boroughs open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

On Sunday, July 24, all hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applicants will have to be through the doors at 3:45 p.m. to be guaranteed service.

During the rest of the week, with hours extended to 6:30 p.m., applicants will have to be through the doors by 5:45 p.m.

For more information on the application process and to begin the process online, visit the city clerk’s website at or call 311. Further information is available at
